An Autobiography
The central and most relevant part of the book is my attempt to escape from Yugoslavia into the neighboring country of Austria. This daring escape was methodically planned in collaboration with two of my friends for two years. Harrowing escape and eight months in jails and refugee camps throughout Austria were full of fascinating and dangerous events. Finally, I arrived in Chicago, USA, in the month of February 1966, with two dollars in my possession, no knowledge of the English language, and, to add, no one to contact. At the young age of 22, I found myself in an unfamiliar and peculiar surrounding.

This book presents the opportunity for a wider spectrum of readers not only to read an interesting and compelling story of the author’s life but also to learn some history of the Balkan countries and their never-ending conflicts and tragedies caused by it.

The year is 1965, and the oppressive communist regime in the country of Yugoslavia is in its highest form. Two of my friends and I created a secret plan on how to escape from Yugoslavia into the neighboring country of Austria. Our harrowing escape and hardships of eight months in jails and multiple refugee camps throughout Austria created a life-threatening situation for me.
